Here in Cincinnati they like to tear down theold buildings instead of rehabbing them, some of them arre protected because they are historical but most of them are not. The building that I live in is old though I don't know how old. The city gave it to buddy gray and a bunch of other activists. It was totally gutted out and rehabbed by volunteers and donations. Maybe that explains that when something goes wrong in one of the apartments it usually happens in mine first. By the way I was the first one to move into my building and I got to pick which apartment I want. I love the place, I have these window sills that I can use as bookshelves. I also got my front porch something that I always wanted. It's right across the park and I can watch the kids play. It's great!!!

In England some buildings are classed as 'listed buildings', which means that they cannot be demolished and if they are refurbished they must conform to certain standards without changing the essential historical character of the building. _________________ I like the English. That is how they are here.......but it is a fight to keep some of them because big corporations move in and want to take the land. Then the fight is on with the people in the area to protect the building. Sometimes I think the judge gets paid off and then the big corporation does as it pleases. It is a shame to lose some of these great places. Some are actually moved to other sites even. We are trying to protect Shiloh which the area where the Civil War was fought. It is being slowly edged in by big companies now and the land needs to be protected. There is a non profit org. that keeps it in the same condition as it was all those years ago. Not sure of the name of it, just that I read it in the Civil War Times magazine. _________________

It seems to be a sign of the times that big corporations can encroach on significant historical building or locations. Maybe that is one of the few areas that the aristocracy here in UK actually earns it's stripes. Prince Charles speaks up about protecting historical sites and buildings and has a little bit of influence with Government, although he is meant to be politically 'inactive'!
Another problem in this country is that schools in 'poorer' areas are being underfunded and are selling off school sports fields to big companies. However, the ripple effect means that English children are getting unhealthier because of lack of sports provision, extremely poor diets (junk food kids) and their education suffers due to ADHD etc. _________________ I like the English. The same thing is happening here also hon. We keep the grandkids active here at home to make up for it. They do have recess at their school and other activities which help. I try to buy healthy foods and fruits and veggies for the kids to snack on instead of high calorie low nutrition foods. _________________

In England, schools from the more affluent areas still have lots of sports activities and areas both indoor and outdoor to cater for this. It really makes me mad that children from the less affluent areas do not get the same opportunies (academic as well as sports).
Like you writer, we do our best to make sure the kids eat good food and stay active. We restrict the time that my hubby's daughter spends on the computer (she's tecchy like her Dad! ), especially in the spring and summer months. Jessica is spending the next four days out horseriding from 9.30 until 4.30 at the stable where she learns how to ride at weekends. Hubby's oldest child (son) spends lots of time out with his pals fishing, cycling, climbing trees etc. hail, rain or shine! (Like father like son I guess!)
